Live-in care vs a residential care home: the 2026 comparison

A managed live-in package now starts at about £15001900/wk[1]. A typical UK residential care home costs £12001800/wk[1], and a nursing home £1,400-£2,100/wk. On headline cost, the two arrangements are within reach of each other for the first time in a decade.

The means-test difference that matters

The biggest financial difference is not weekly cost, it is the means test. If your mum lives at home, the value of her house is disregarded entirely while she is using care. If she moves into a residential home, the house is counted as capital after a 12-week disregard, unless a spouse, civil partner or qualifying relative still lives there[3].

That single rule is why so many self-funders prefer live-in even when residential is cheaper on headline price.
